Long Term Conditions Scenarios for the NHS & Cost Improvement Plans for Pharma
Situation
In the early days of NHS RightCare (lots of data) we realised that commissioners were not taking note and acting on the data.
I was the founder (with Professor Matthew Cripps) that came up with the idea of combining an emotional story with hard data to create the "Long Term Conditions Scenario" We covered many areas from Wound Care to Parkinsons. The consistent theme was that when you get things right from the start, the patient experience is far superior, but so too is the cost! (On average - about 50% less.)
Approach
We worked with clinicians to develop a "typical story" and an "optimal story" (whilst still realistic).
We then mapped EVERY single transaction throughout the entire pathway - sometimes over 30 years. The final report was like the film sliding doors - this is the typical story (often emotionally upsetting) vs what we can do! NB Wilmington Healthcare picked up on how powerful this system was and commissioned me to run many of these for phrama companies.
Outcome
The outcome was reports that "moved" commissioners into action. These reports have had a significant and long lasting impact.
From the pharma perspective they often create a compelling business case for pharma products.
How long did it take
This depends upon the management teams involved and the availability of the expert clinicians involved.
A guide would be between 3 to 9 months.
Cost
There can be a very wide range here depending upon the project and the clinician engagement.
